While common in freshwater marshes, Red-winged Blackbirds are uncommon out on Plymouth Beach. They are most likely seen after breeding is complete and before southward migration. At that time, small flocks forage for insects in the wrack and at the edge of dunes. Throughout spring and summer, a small number may also breed at the mouth of the Eel River. By early fall, blackbirds leave the beach to form large, pre-migratory flocks at preferred food sources. |
