kingfisher
Most likely seen at the mouth of the Eel River, this otherwise Blue Jay-like bird is an expert fisher, diving precipitously after prey spotted from perches ten or more feet above the water. Kingfishers build burrow nests in cliff faces. Most of the Kingfishers you see near the beach in summer are likely to breed nearby. Those found in winter, however, may be from much further away.
