Once nearly extirpated from the northeast by pesticide poisoning, Ospreys are once again a common raptor in our region. In fact, one pair recently built a nest on Plymouth Beach's nesting platform. When not at the nest, Ospreys can be seen flying high above bays, harbors and ponds seeking fish prey. Ospreys catch fish with specialized gripping talons by plunge diving into the water. Most Ospreys leave by mid-October, commencing a long migration that takes many to Central and South America and the Caribbean.
