The Saltmarsh Sharp-tailed Sparrow will not be the first bird you see on Plymouth Beach, but it is an interesting one. It nests exclusively in salt marsh, and is extraordinarily mouse-like, preferring to run than to fly. The exception is in spring, when this sparrow, with bright-orange and ochre facial markings, will pop out of the grass and perch conspicuously to advertise its breeding territory. A few of these sparrows will linger on the beach as late as December, until the ice floes of winter drive them south. |
