Ocean Tidal Flats Sandy Beach Dunes Salt Marsh
Salt marshes are coastal wetlands rich in marine life that develop on estuaries and the landside of barrier beaches. Daily tidal surges deliver nutrients to salt tolerant plants. Salt marshes are nursery areas for fishes, shellfish and crustaceans, and are among the most productive ecosystems on earth.

The Saltmarsh Sharp-tailed Sparrow will not be the first bird you see on Plymouth Beach, but it is an interesting one. It nests exclusively in salt marsh, and is extraordinarily mouse-like, preferring to run than to fly. The exception is in spring, when this sparrow, with bright-orange and ochre facial markings, will pop out of the grass and perch conspicuously to advertise its breeding territory. A few of these sparrows will linger on the beach as late as December, until the ice floes of winter drive them south.
