Visitors to Plymouth Beach 30 years ago remember the Willet as a migratory species. Since 1976, Willets once-again breed in dense beach grass along the edge of New England's salt marshes. Willets have returned because of conservation efforts that halted hunting of this species and increased habitat protection. When nesting, Willets are highly territorial, and will find you before you find them-- calling to protect their nest and young if you approach within several hundred yards! After breeding, Willets leave New England to winter from southern New Jersey south to the Gulf Coast. |
