Ocean Tidal Flats Sandy Beach Dunes Salt Marsh
Salt marshes are coastal wetlands rich in marine life that develop on estuaries and the landside of barrier beaches. Daily tidal surges deliver nutrients to salt tolerant plants. Salt marshes are nursery areas for fishes, shellfish and crustaceans, and are among the most productive ecosystems on earth.

Snowy Egrets are regular visitors, frequenting the marsh and mudflats at the mouth of the Eel River. Like other herons and egrets, Snowy Egrets nest in colonies in trees, usually on remote islands safe from most predators. After breeding is complete, between late July and mid-September, egrets roam far from their nesting colonies, and more may visit Plymouth Beach at this time to hunt fish in the shallow estuary.
