Sandy beaches are dynamic systems, constantly reshaped by shifting sands from wind, ocean waves and currents. Shorebirds that breed in this habitat lay their eggs in shallow scrapes in the sand, and forage for food in beach wrack. During winter months, sandy beaches frequently become cobble shores. |

Herring Gulls are common throughout the year. True omnivores, Herring Gulls eat everything from fish to shellfish to french fries and small mammals. Most summer birds are young of less than four years old, or breeders from nearby colonies. In winter, Herring Gulls from more distant locations, such as Cape Cod, coastal Maine or Newfoundland, join or replace local birds on Plymouth Beach. |
