Ocean Tidal Flats Sandy Beach Dunes Salt Marsh
Sandy beaches are dynamic systems, constantly reshaped by shifting sands from wind, ocean waves and currents.  Shorebirds that breed in this habitat lay their eggs in shallow scrapes in the sand, and forage for food in beach wrack. During winter months, sandy beaches frequently become cobble shores.

Black Terns are uncommon, but distinctive visitors. Unlike other terns, which are silver and white, Black Terns are nearly all black in spring and summer and dark gray in fall. They visit Plymouth Beach en route between their breeding habitat in freshwater marshes in northern Maine and Canada and their wintering grounds at sea in the tropical North Atlantic. You are most likely to see them resting on tidal flats with other terns.
