Ocean Tidal Flats Sandy Beach Dunes Salt Marsh
Sandy beaches are dynamic systems, constantly reshaped by shifting sands from wind, ocean waves and currents.  Shorebirds that breed in this habitat lay their eggs in shallow scrapes in the sand, and forage for food in beach wrack. During winter months, sandy beaches frequently become cobble shores.

Snow Buntings arrive at the end of October and stay until early spring. They migrate to Massachusetts after nesting in the high Arctic. Wheeling flocks of black and white winged buntings are a special site reserved for the hearty winter observer. They feed on dune grass seeds, and may be scarce in years when the seed crop is low or when the snow pack is dense.
