Ocean Tidal Flats Sandy Beach Dunes Salt Marsh
Sandy beaches are dynamic systems, constantly reshaped by shifting sands from wind, ocean waves and currents.  Shorebirds that breed in this habitat lay their eggs in shallow scrapes in the sand, and forage for food in beach wrack. During winter months, sandy beaches frequently become cobble shores.

Ring-billed Gulls are common year-round. Most adults leave in summer to breed on inland lakes, while immature gulls will stay on the beach year-round. Ring-billed Gulls are attracted to beach-goers with handouts and food that people leave behind on the beach. Too many gulls attracted in this way could threaten nesting Piping Plovers and Least Terns.
