Ocean Tidal Flats Sandy Beach Dunes Salt Marsh
Sandy beaches are dynamic systems, constantly reshaped by shifting sands from wind, ocean waves and currents.  Shorebirds that breed in this habitat lay their eggs in shallow scrapes in the sand, and forage for food in beach wrack. During winter months, sandy beaches frequently become cobble shores.

An aerial hunter of small insects, Bank Swallows visit the skies over Plymouth Beach from May until September. They are colony nesters that build burrows into cliff faces. Plymouth's bank swallows in May and June are local birds breeding in nearby seashore cliff faces. By late July, these birds are joined by migrants from other areas, who arrive to feed on the abundance of flying insects nearby.
