Ocean Tidal Flats Sandy Beach Dunes Salt Marsh
Coastal dunes form as dry beach sand blows inland. Plants act as a windbreak, trapping sand particles. The dunes become higher and wider as sand accumulates, protecting the coastline during storms. Colonies of common terns and other seabirds make their nests in the shelter of sand dunes.

owl
A rare visitor to the beach, this owl is most active at dawn and dusk when it hunts over open fields, marshes and dunes. On Plymouth Beach, Short-eared Owls are most likely encountered on the dunes during late fall, winter and early spring. Once much more common, this species has declined dramatically as its preferred open habitats have been developed for housing or allowed to become forest.
