Ocean Tidal Flats Sandy Beach Dunes Salt Marsh
Coastal dunes form as dry beach sand blows inland. Plants act as a windbreak, trapping sand particles. The dunes become higher and wider as sand accumulates, protecting the coastline during storms. Colonies of common terns and other seabirds make their nests in the shelter of sand dunes.

The Savannah Sparrow is a small, rather elusive, grey-brown bird that nests on the ground in beach grass. It is paler than a Song Sparrow and has a small splash of yellow feathers on its lores between the eyes and bill. During the winter months, a very pale-colored migratory race of this sparrow, known as the "Ipswich Sparrow", may be seen hopping along the toe of the dunes and tidal wrack.
