Ocean salinity, currents and tidal action keep coastal waters open in the late fall and early spring, providing habitat for seabirds that rely on coastal waters or open ocean for food. An enclosed bay, estuary, and open ocean create habitat for migrating shorebirds and wintering marine ducks. |

A boldly patterned sea duck that dives from the water's surface to feed on invertebrates and small fish, Common Goldeneyes arrive on Plymouth Bay in late fall to take up winter residency. On even the coldest winter days, amorous male Goldeneyes can be found courting females just offshore by doing elaborate acrobatic displays. By May, Goldeneyes leave to breed in boreal ponds, some as far away as Labrador and Alaska. |
