Ocean Tidal Flats Sandy Beach Dunes Salt Marsh
Tidal flats are created by swift currents and exposed when the tide goes out. Sand and mud flats in coastal wetlands provide food for migratory shorebirds. Each species finds the zone for its foraging style and appetite. Adjacent upland and transitional habitats provide nesting and roosting areas.

Semipalmated Sandpiper PHOTO: 1 2
The Semipalmated Sandpiper is perhaps the most abundant bird on Plymouth Beach in summer and early fall, migrating from Canada to wintering grounds in the tropics and South America. Like a smaller, dingier Sanderling, the Semipalmated Sandpiper is more fond of mudflats, though both species roost on sandy beach during high tide. In big flocks, both species are especially sensitive to disturbance and should be given a wide berth by passersby.
