The Semipalmated Sandpiper is perhaps the most abundant bird on Plymouth Beach in summer and early fall, migrating from Canada to wintering grounds in the tropics and South America. Like a smaller, dingier Sanderling, the Semipalmated Sandpiper is more fond of mudflats, though both species roost on sandy beach during high tide. In big flocks, both species are especially sensitive to disturbance and should be given a wide berth by passersby. |
