Ocean Tidal Flats Sandy Beach Dunes Salt Marsh
Tidal flats are created by swift currents and exposed when the tide goes out. Sand and mud flats in coastal wetlands provide food for migratory shorebirds. Each species finds the zone for its foraging style and appetite. Adjacent upland and transitional habitats provide nesting and roosting areas.

Short-billed Dowitchers visit during migration in spring, summer and fall. They need the food they acquire on the beach to refuel for a migration that takes them from the Canadian Arctic to the southern US and Central America. While on the beach, they feed heavily on invertebrates by probing the mud and sand with long, tactile bills. Short-billed Dowitchers can be found either feeding in shallow tidal pools on the sand flats or resting on the sandy beach of the bay side.
