Another winter is bringing us Snowy Owls, so let’s take advantage of their presence and seek them out. Besides the sometimes elusive owl, we will look for sea ducks, like the lovely common eider and colorful surf scoter, snow buntings, horned larks and more. This is a popular trip, so sign up early to reserve your spot. There is a $10 program fee.
We will carpool from the main parking area to the Goldenrod field station, with a few stops along the way at good vantage points. From the field station, we will walk the beach, around the north tip of the peninsula and back along the harbor side, weather permitting. Total walking distance is around 2.8 miles. If you would like to return to the field station early and relax and wait for the group, that’s an option, too.
Dress in warm layers with a top one that will block the wind. The wind off of the ocean is chilly. Bring a backpack, lunch, water bottle and binoculars. Your leader (me, Dorie) will carry a spotting scope and you are welcome to bring yours, as well. We will be able to warm up, drink hot beverages (tea and coffee provided), and use the bathrooms at the field station.
When you register, please leave both an email address and a phone number (which will only be used in case of last minute changes or if you are running late to the meeting spot). We will run this trip in most so-called bad weather, but not in a blizzard nor if the ocean is over-washing the road!
We will do our best to return to the main parking lot by 3:00 p.m.; however, please don’t schedule anything immediately following the trip in case we are delayed. Last year, we had a grand sighting of a snowy owl perched photogenically on a weather vane as we were driving out and had to stop to admire it and take photos. (You can also always walk back; it’s only 1.5 miles from the field station to where your car will be parked.)
