Piping plover and chicks

Piping plover and chicks

This special birding trip is for those who really would like to see Plymouth’s nesting piping plovers and chicks, but don’t have a lot of time. We will head out early to view these special birds, perhaps take quick looks at nesting osprey and least terns, and return to the main parking lot. YOU MUST PRE-REGISTER FOR THIS TRIP – SCROLL TO BOTTOM TO DO SO.

If you have never seen a piping plover chick, you are in for a real treat. And, if you already have seen one, you know that’s it’s always a special event to see these “cotton balls on toothpick legs” growing up safely on the beach.

We will meet at the far (north) end of the Long Beach main parking lot. You MUST pay a fee to park there ($10 on weekdays or $15 on weekends) or have bought a Plymouth Parks Pass (for Plymouth residents only). Leave a note on your dashboard saying you will pay the fee on your way out since the fee station does not open until 9 a.m. Goldenrod Foundation can not waive the parking fee for you. The only way you will not need to pay for parking is if you have a 4-WD vehicle and will carry people out to the field station for our program. In this case, I will give you a parking pass that will allow you to park at the Goldenrod field station for the duration of our birding trip.

Wear shoes good for walking in the sand and (possibly) salt water. Sun protection (sunscreen, sunglasses, wide-brimmed hat) is a necessity, as is water. Bring your binoculars or rent a pair from us ($5 for high-quality Swarovski binos).  We will also have two spotting scopes for you to use and you are welcome to bring your own.

REGISTRATION IS MANDATORY so that we have enough vehicles to carry all.

Sign up below. The trip will be canceled in the case of inclement weather. Check your email the night before the trip if the weather seems questionable.
