Piping plover and chicks

Piping plover and chicks

This special birding trip is for viewing piping plovers and least terns with the knowledgable, personable, and entertaining master birder, Evan Dalton. There is a small window of time to view plover chicks at their cutest and this is it! Evan will tell you about the behavior of the birds as they court, nest and watch over chicks. You will also look for other birds we often find on Long Beach, such as Bank Swallows, Horned Larks, Common Terns and Black Skimmers.  Evan will describe the innovations and successes in beach management and conservation that are aiding these beach-nesting birds.

If you have never seen a piping plover chick, you are in for a real treat. And, if you already have seen one, you know that’s it’s always a special event to see these “cotton balls on toothpick legs” growing up safely on the beach.

We will meet at the far (north) end of the Long Beach main parking lot. You MUST pay a fee to park there ($10 on weekdays or $15 on weekends) or have bought a Plymouth Parks Pass (for Plymouth residents only). If you have a 4-WD vehicle and will carry people out to the field station for our program Evan will give you a parking pass that will allow you to park at the Goldenrod field station for the duration of the birding trip.

Wear shoes good for walking in the sand and (possibly) salt water. Sun protection (sunscreen, sunglasses, wide-brimmed hat) is a necessity, as is water. Snacks are recommended. Bring your binoculars.  We will have a spotting scope for you to use and you are welcome to bring your own.
