Plymouth Long Beach - Main Public Beach
Mid-summer means the beginning of southbound shorebird migration in Plymouth, Kingston and Duxbury Bays. PLUS, there are still beach-nesting birds around – such as Piping Plovers, Least Terns and Willets. Join shorebird expert Soheil Zendeh and Goldenrod program manager Dorie Stolley for a taste of what summer on Long Beach has to offer. With luck, along with our nesting birds, we will see numerous migratory shorebirds, such as Semipalmated Sandpiper, Least Sandpiper, Ruddy Turnstone, Willet, Greater Yellowlegs, Black-bellied Plover, Semipalmated Plover, Sanderling, Whimbrel and Red Knot.
No matter what we find, an afternoon and evening on Long Beach is sure to be enjoyable! Wear shoes for walking in sand and possibly in the water, as well. We will walk about 2.5 miles. Bring binoculars, water, snacks, sunglasses, brimmed hat and sunscreen. We will have two spotting scopes. High quality binoculars are available to rent for an extra $5.
Directions to our meeting place will be sent once you sign up. From there, we will carpool to near the Crossover on Long Beach where our walk will start. The program runs from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.
